CambridgeSeven welcomes Photographer Joseph Levendusky to the Paul Dietrich Gallery with a new collection of photographs
WHO:CambridgeSeven + the Paul Dietrich Gallery
WHAT:A Sense of Place –Photographs by Joseph Levendusky. Shot in color during 2023 and 2024,A Sense of Placecomprises 22 images which were captured close to home in places that presented themselves as intriguing but perhaps overlooked. The photographs are meant to express singular characteristics of landscape and built environment in diverse locales, some of which may be familiar and some not.
Over the last 30 years, Levendusky has photographed in environs ranging from New York and Boston to Beijing and Saint Petersburg, Russia. Working in color to capture the photographs that compriseA Sense of Placeis a return to the beginning of his career when he began shooting color slide film and exhibiting Cibachrome prints.A Sense of Placeis Levendusky’s first completely digital body of work.
WHEN:The exhibition is currently open and on view until June 27, 2025. A gallery reception will be held on Thursday, April 24, 2025 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. It is open to the public.
WHERE:The Paul Dietrich Gallery at CambridgeSeven, which recently moved to its brand new home in Charles Square at 20 University Road, Cambridge, MA.
Exhibition Highlights:
Levendusky’s focus inA Sense of Placewas using color and light to capture local places. Some, like Pigeon Cove in Rockport and Providence, are the subjects of more than one photograph. In the rapid pace of modern life where many things get overlooked, Levendusky’s photographs offer the space to slow down and mindfully examine the details and textures of our human habitat.
About Joseph Levendusky
Levendusky has photographed in environs ranging from New York and Boston to Beijing and Saint Petersburg, Russia for 30 years. In the early 2000’s, he produced a large body of work documenting the beautiful and deteriorating buildings of Detroit. In 2013, his photo essayBeijing Journalwas exhibited at the Multi-Cultural Arts Center in Cambridge with support from the Cambridge Arts Council. An exploration of traditionalhutongneighborhoods consisting of 49 black and white prints interspersed with text passages, it was intended to be an enlarged version of the photo essays that once appeared inLifeandLookmagazines.
