The Mane event struck a blow against the stigma of medical cannabis use in sports, defeating Matt Dwyer in a third round decision in the flagship fight of the night. This convincing victory will help dispel the idea that professional athletics and the use of cannabis for medical purposes are mutually exclusive. True to his commitment to clean sport, Theodorou did not consume THC for 48 hours before his fight.
Theodorou was able to harness the energy and fire he showed in his 8-3 run in the UFC and the winning ways he established in the Ultimate Fighter TV competition, where he came out on top in 2014. , closing the evening after an entertaining undercard. . Since his release from the UFC in 2018, he has since advocated for medical cannabis in sport – receiving his therapeutic use clearance from the British Columbia Sporting Commission in 2020.
Elias hopes his victory will pave the way for other athletes to also apply for a Therapeutic Use Clearance without fear of being stigmatized, creating a more inclusive and fair world for athletes, personalities and creators. Collaboration with an inclusive and community service such as Imagine British Columbia is only natural – striving to create a more equitable world is a vision shared by the MMA fighter and the platform.
