Giveaway animates Onikan as Super Falcons defeat Mali in opening game – Sport – The Guardian Nigeria News – Nigeria and World News
Super Falcons forward Monday Gift lit up Mobolaji Johnson Arena Onikan yesterday with a brace that knocked out brave Mali. It was the opening match of the first-ever Aisha Buhari invitational women’s football tournament, which drew football fans and enthusiasts from all over the world to the host city of Lagos.
The Malians, who entered the match determined to end Nigeria’s dominance in the games between the two countries, gave the Super Falcons as much as they received until coach Waldrum brought in Gift and Uchenna Kanu.
The visiting Female Eagles had survived a raid in their zone in the 5th minute as Nigeria looked to take the lead with a corner kick, but the defense cleared. Nine minutes later, Ordega’s side scored with another quick swing and in the 18th minute Ageusissa Diarra tested goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie on a free kick from 30 yards.
In the second half, new Nigerian entrants Gift and Kanu teamed up with experienced skipper Asisat Oshoala, Francisca Ordega and Desire Oparanozie to unlock the unstable Malian defense.
The Falcons’ dominance finally paid off in the 82nd minute when Gift landed a header on a cross from Oshoala.
Lagos-based Gift ensured Nigeria’s victory in added time when they lobbed the ball off the Malian goalkeeper on a pass from Oshoala.
