Rostrevor wins Down GAA Og sports competition

Rostrevor won the Down GAA Og Sport competition on Sunday after beating holders Newry Shamrocks in the final.
The Og Sport competition is a U15 7-A-Side competition and in the group stages 2011 winners Newry Shamrocks were the only team to remain undefeated. In the semifinals, the Shamrocks were joined by Rostrevor, Ballyholland and An Riocht. The Shamrocks beat An Riocht 3-6 to 2-1 while Rostrevor defeated Ballyholland 1-7 to 0-7. The Shamrocks entered the final as favorites, as they beat Rostrevor in the group stage 2-7 to 0-3. However, in the opening minutes of the final, Rostrevor scored two goals to give them a lead that Shamrock just couldn’t eat away at. The Shamrocks needed goals to get back into the game and they ran against Rostrevor especially in the second half, but Rostrevor defended the lead and his keeper made a number of superb saves. Eventually, Rostrevor won the Seamus Fitzsimons Cup for the first time since 2009, winning the game 3-8 to 1.5. The cup was presented to Rostrevor winner Captain Joe Morgan by Rory Fitzsimons, a great-grandson of Seamus Fitzsimons. Rory had actually played in the group stages of this year’s competition for Saul. Rostrevor will now represent Down at the Ulster Og Sport Competition scheduled to take place on Saturday September 8, 2012.
