Six Cape Breton Capers basketball games hit by break in Atlantic college sports calendar


SYDNEY, NS – Atlantic University Sport will suspend all varsity athletic competitions until at least January 19, the organization said on Wednesday.

The decision to suspend the conference hours was made in accordance with recent public health restrictions set by each of the Atlantic provinces.

“The health and well-being of our student-athletes is our primary concern as we navigate this latest wave of COVID-19, and we understand that providing them with meaningful competition is part of it,” said the Executive Director of AUS, Phil Currie, in a press release.

“While the suspension of the AUS schedule is a necessary decision given our current reality, we are confident that, under the leadership of our provincial health authorities, we will return to the playing field and complete the 2021-22 season. in a way that is safe for everyone. . “

The AUS will continue to monitor and follow public health guidelines regarding the COVID-19 pandemic and will have more information regarding the resumption of the 2021-22 season in January.

AUS says it remains committed to delivering varsity sport into the winter of 2022 in a way that maintains the health and safety of all stakeholders as its top priority.

The scheduled break has an impact on the regular season games of the Cape Breton Capers men’s and women’s basketball teams.

The Cape Breton teams were scheduled to host the Memorial Sea-Hawks Jan. 8-9 at Sullivan Field House in Sydney, before heading to Fredericton to face the New Brunswick Reds on Jan.15.

The AUS has not said if these games will be rescheduled.
